Originally, the world was a peaceful place. Named Mobius, it consisted of most (if not all) of the zones from the Sonic games all the way up through Sonic Adventure 2 co-existing. At the center of it all was Central City, specifically, but that's not quite so important now.
It had been a couple years past the events of Sonic Adventure 2; the world had finished recovering from its near-destruction by the mad Gerald Robotnik. But things were not as peaceful as they seemed... Shadow the hedgehog returned after four years, seeking the chaos emeralds. He had one mission in mind: Revive Maria. Unfortunately, he was working with Dr. Eggman, who had other plans.
Shadow fought his way to gathering the emeralds, even turning against Sonic in order to get them. But once the mad doctor had obtained them, he decided to use them on himself instead, using a strange belt. He became Hyper Robotnik, and proceeded to fight both Sonic and Shadow--but as usual, he was beaten down. The emeralds scattered again...
But Eggman was not through. Using his genius mind, he discovered a way to break through the barriers between dimensions, and in turn teleport into alternate realities. He went into one where a good version of himself, Dr. Kintobor, had sealed away the evils of the world into their version of the chaos emeralds. These so-called 'Dark Emeralds' were easy to steal, and soon enough Dr. Eggman had all of their power. Planning to exact his revenge, he took them back to his home dimension.
Those emeralds, too, scattered. They began to introduce those sins to the hapless population of Mobius, causing many formerly good people to turn evil, and the balance of the world to shift uncontrollably. The world was on the brink of destruction yet again, at least until a group of heroes rose up and defeated the sins of the emeralds themselves, with the help of the Maria from the alternate universe. The zone cops, the people entrusted to keep the balance of the universe from falling apart, made sure they were sent back. Zonic, their representative, personally ensured it. And for a time, everything was peaceful...
...But Eggman continued trying. He rebuilt the Death Egg from old parts, and also enlisted the aid of one of his greatest fans: Beangirl. Shadow again sided with him (despite the past dispute) and together they managed to create a deadly ice cannon which, fired from the Death Egg, froze Downunda (the southern continent of Mobius) into a sort of ice age. The emeralds were also collected yet again.
The heroes who past defeated the sins rose again. They (Tails, Debt, Killer, Sonic, and possibly others) broke into the Death Egg and fought evil yet again. Beangirl was presumably killed by a shot from Killer, and soon after Eggman fled. Sonic and Shadow fought a GUN walker before escaping the Death Egg. And with a large explosion, the entire Death Egg fiasco was toast.
But Eggman again struck, this time aiding GUN. The GUN people created a cybernetic dragon and then proceeded to threaten the world with its ability to make a nearby volcano explode. Even worse, GUN mind controlled Shadow into following them, and Sonic somehow managed to disappear. Things looked bleak, at least until a similar group of heroes again came forth and saved the day. Amy managed to release Shadow from his mind control, and Tails and Emmy helped fight off GUN.
GUN still managed to obtain the final emerald they needed, though, and used it to power up a new and improved version of the Ark's death ray, destroying Neo Nemesis (the dragon.) But that cannon was blown up by some futuristic figure in armor, who sent all the emeralds flying before vanishing.
...After a while of relative peace, though, the heroes were once again under fire. After a relatively minor encounter with a group named M.O.O.D., suddenly a strange genius named Dr. Dingel Dongle thrust a new invention at them: Roboticisation. Using this terrifying invention, he turned Sonic into a robotic villain, as well as a number of other mobians, including mayoral candidate Genevieve. In the end, though, he was defeated by the heroes yet again, even after sending Genevieve (the only -truly- roboticised mobian in all of this) to fight them.
Afterwards, it was discovered a massive meteorite was heading towards the planet. The heroes once again collected the chaos emeralds, and managed to avert it... barely. At the same time Knuckles and some others went to Downunda and defrosted it from its ice age.
Afterwards, Eggman designed himself some nifty air boards, and attempted to run a tournament with it. Involved with this was the Babylon Rogues. However, mere moments before the first race was to start... his entire flying base (Metal City) exploded.
This was caused by Metal Sonic's experiments nearby. He and Killer had taken over a toy company named Klein Toys, and they planned to rule the world. Using hypno-toys, they brainwashed the children of Central City into becoming their servants. They quickly took over the town, and spread outwards to take over Casinopolis and Green Hill zone. They then proceeded to assimilate GUN, leaving only ten members of the original GUN still standing (and loyal). Using their might, they completely took over the government of the area and became rulers of that part of Mobius--but not without problems. No longer having to fight the good guys, they turned inwards.
Killer fought Metal Sonic to the finish, seemingly dying. Metal Sonic himself vanished. Klein Toys remained in power, though...
Eggman attempted to begin another tournament, this one a fighting tournament. Despite promising amounts of volunteers, no actual fighting occurred.
A few fighters struggled to take down Klein Toys. Metal Sonic himself reappeared, betraying his former company for personal reasons. Eventually, an organized team with Tails, Silver, Ronia, Metal Sonic in disguise, Shadow, and co. took them out, restoring order to the world.
But it was short-lived, as nearby, the city of Maru Mari had been built. It was made by a company owned by a strange being named Gyrus D, and had a special beam device...
One which Eggman took it over to control. Once he had control, Eggman used it to trap the then-returning Little Planet in his clutches. GUN had previously built up a presence on the planet, with the help of the scientist Hyuga.
Fighting occurred repeatedly between GUN and Eggman. Eggman used a Time Stone he obtained to bring back Evil Debt and revive Beangirl, and made a mess for other people (Ronia in particular). GUN struck back, but then they and Eggman made a truce to find all the Time Stones and re-unite them. Metal Sonic caught onto this and aided in the search, although he planned to use them for himself...
Many of the stones were gathered. A being named Mammoth Mogul re-awakened from an ancient slumber, but he had no chance to do anything yet, as GUN, Eggman, Metal Sonic, and a now-crazed Evil Debt came into conflict over finding the last Time Stone. Evil Debt had discovered that Eggman had no qualms using her as an object, and, knowing her continued existence was unlikely, threatened to steal the last Time Stone and hide it.
If this occurred, all of reality could have been torn to shreds by the Time Stones being unable to keep the flow of time even, which had been revealed earlier. Eggman's base at the shrine didn't help matters; still, the final Time stone was found right there... with Killer, Debt, Metal Sonic, and Eggman all poised to grab it.
A grand battle began, with Evil Debt trying to get Killer to harm Eggman, and Metal Sonic just shooting at whoever he pleased. Still, after a long fight, a surprise ending occurred, in which Skyler killed the Evil Debt. Soon after, the Time stones were replaced; the previous truce having given Maru Mari to GUN, the Little Planet was no longer held captive.
All involved scattered to the winds as the Little Planet drifted away again. But the time of peace was short, as the Mogul now finally made his explosive debut, blowing a hole in one of Metal Sonic's bases. Indeed, that base was the Klein Toys base he'd rebuilt; the organization began to return, in a new role to fight Mogul.
Mogul built up his own, gaining many Majin. Olivia, Killer, Logan, Izzi, Credence, and Four in all. His acquisition of Four specifically ticked off a crazy commander at Casinopolis; Anthon Tark. Anthon had presided over the governmental response to Metal Sonic's destruction of Mogul's house earlier, and now found his secret weapon (Four) kidnapped and gone. One thing led to another, and GUN blew apart a civilian airship Mogul had bought. Even with a chaos emerald, Mogul could not repel the GUN fleet, and he was knocked down and out for a short while. Meanwhile, one of GUN's ships was destroyed.
Shortly before, an inexplicable incident occurred involving Metal Sonic's ships damaging a massive ship of ancient design. Said ship vanished shortly after, when GUN's own ships came to investigate.
In this chaotic world, Mogul got himself a house and a church, and a set of mobsters on his side. But he was too successful--indeed, he achieved godhood too soon to control the world he'd set up his pieces to take over. Once a god, he lost all interest in ruling the mortal plane and left for the upper ones.
Metal Sonic, meanwhile, had rebuilt Klein Toys, and was busy on a new project involving of all things... outer space. Killer continued manuevering in the background, and eventually vanished after a number of incidents in which he used the Master Emerald to incapacitate people, such as Logan.
Later, Anthon Tark appointed Genevieve mayor of Casinopolis and helped to rebuild it. Metal Sonic, scheming again, tricked Sonic into granting him access to the special zone, and just as many people conspired to destroy his base in the Aquatic ruins, he returned with stolen energy from the zone and launched his ship into space. Meanwhile, a new force of evil, the Dark Legion, appeared on the Floating island, and announced their intent to rebuild their city.
Just as Anthon was getting used to peace, he heard of an AI named Search that was going to use the ARK to attack Metal Sonic's space-bound base. Previously, Eggman had allowed Search, Blitz, and others aboard. Using a secret GUN teleporter, Tark warped aboard with Killer and brought the situation back to normal. He drove off the intruders--but Sonic, who was also aboard, snapped and nearly killed him. This changed Tark forever.
A mysterious stone was unearthed and changed hands rapidly as Tark recovered and eventually began a region-wide sting on crime, ultimately washing away the remains of Mogul's empire. However, several people rose against GUN, and Tark had a hard time keeping them at bay. Killer and his friend, Ashes, turned their backs to GUN specifically. As Tark began to reach out to Capital City for possible alliance and/or other deals, he was approached by the Dark Legion with a number of trades, not all of them legal. Mistakes were made and the two nations soon were near war, over a botched spy mission Tark had initiated.
Tensions loomed between the Dark Legion and Casinopolis, and Logan, Credence, a professor, and others searched out the meaning of a mysterious 'Paranga' stone. Eventually things came to a head as Tark blew away a hidden Legion recruiting center in Casinopolis. He met with Juli-su and the Chaotix, and with their help, started a civil war which split the Dark Legion into two factions, the new one of which was named Yosuga. Tark quickly allied himself with them, bringing an end to the major conflict between Casinopolis and the Dark Legion.
As Tark and his star agent, Pinion, wiped the world of the remnants of the corrupt GUN earlier(having finished with Mogul's people) tension grew between Tark and the Sonic Heroes, culminating in Tark using Tails' advice to take control over Emerl and later bring Sonic into a courtroom confrontation few would later forget. If this wasn't enough, he prepared to fight Klein Toys and finish them once and for all, with Killer's help. (Killer had joined his side after an extensive side-story involving the past of Killer.)
In the meantime, Joan's group continued their research, encountering the occasional difficulty before then splitting up into two groups. Sometime after, Joan and a number of her companions departed to find yet some more tablets. Metal Sonic continued to drift around aimlessly as well. |
